Holiday Movie Review: 'Red One', 'Our Little Secret' & 'The Merry Gentlemen'

I am benevolent. Did you say? Kubrick cherubic. Oh, like a cherub. Oh, I kind of said the same thing twice.

I mean, I'm so nice that I really can't even think of a lot of adjectives that say how nice it makes me feel uncomfortable. Oh, so nice. We're not going to talk about the ethical dilemma. Though he is naughty, we're. Not going to talk about the ethical dilemmas of the naughty and nice. Little call Call in your stockings. But we figured we started the year off with the Chris Evans spy ROM com and we're going to end the year with the Chris Evans. Also spy ROM com. Holiday espionage movie. That's more accurate. We're bookending our 2024 with Chris Evans, which isn't the worst thing. Or is it?

2:08 And The Merry Gentleman, the Chad Michael Murray Netflix film. We have some things to talk about. Man, All right, anyway. Anyway, let us officially take a bite of Red 1, written by Chris Morgan and Hiram Garcia and directed by Jake Kasdan. A doubter of Santa since he's a Little 1, Jack now spends his time on the top of the naughty list working with Ne'er Do Wells of the World. Little does he know, after sending the coordinates for seismic activity to a client, he has actually sent the location of the magical North Pole to one of Santa's nemeses. The man in red is kidnapped and his number one elf bodyguard. Cal tracks down Jack and brings him along on an action-packed adventure to save Santa and Christmas hours before the sun rises on the present packed day.

3:01 Cool. That's red one. Yeah. All right, so. So what did you think? OK. I was ready to jump in. I'm. I'm so ready. OK, I, I think we typically don't like to talk about movies that we know there's nothing good to say. Or we will talk about movies where it's like it's not great, but like it was fun. That's one of these movies. It's better than Ghosted, but that's a very low bar. Well, you know, I've been really thinking about this. I don't know if I think it's better than Ghosted. OK, I don't say it's necessarily worse. Just don't know if I don't know. But like, but like, let's look at the cast for a second, right?

3:41 JK Simmons, Chris Evans, Dwayne the Rock Johnson, Lucy Liu, Bonnie Hunt, Christopher Hiju, Nick Kroll, Kiernan Shipka. I mean like, these are a fantastic names. Yeah, but you know what? It's weird. Tell me I, Chris Evans didn't do it for me in this. This this one. It was it was some odd choices, which we'll get into. You know who did do it? Lucy Liu, I thought she was great, like she was consistent throughout this whole movie. Jacob Sibbons playing Santa, even though he was asleep for most of the movie. Alter did it for me. Everybody else was kind of themselves. Yeah, I think like right The Rock did in an action type movie, what we think The Rock is going to do. Yeah, I don't.

4:27 So holiday movies in general, right. This is coined as a holiday movie. And I think one of the things that we struggled with was who is this for? Because there was moments where it's like, oh, like especially at the beginning, this kid that doesn't believe in Santa, when he grows up, he's going to believe in Santa. It's like, this is a family movie. And then there was like, curse words and like, I don't know, just jokes that in situations that were like, this might be for adults, but also I'm not sure. Yeah, I think when you're at the North Pole in these types of movies, finish the sentence, you you get the feeling of like, this is a family friendly movie.

5:07 This is for a family, right? And so a good chunk of this movie does play take place in the North Pole, but there was a lot of like cursing and like you said, jokes and so probably throw them like who is this for? I was thinking like, is this, you know how there's that big debate of whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not? They were like, let's make a Die hard that is 100% unquestionably a Christmas. Movie and nowhere near as good as Die Hard. Well, 100% I'm not saying they succeeded in that way. I just found myself. Is that like, so here's my comparison of this and ghosted. And again, they're not really similar in a way, but. He deserves the comparison Fair.

5:52 Ghosted. I was able to sit through Read 1. I started baking blondies for our holiday party at work. You know what I mean? And so I was paying attention. We have an open concept, you know, so I could still see the TV, but it I didn't have to watch every single bit of it. That that makes sense. I think once you figure out what it's about, you're like, oh, I get it. Like I I know the rest of this movie and ghosted fell into that same trap. But I feel like the issue with the both of these movies, and again, only reason why we're comparing it is because Chris Evans is in both of them. And it's both of our movies where it was like we're talking about it, but it's like not a great movie, but like also watch it.

6:33 Yeah, because it's a bizarre movie. And I just feel like for both of them and this one specifically, it didn't feel enough like a holiday movie and didn't feel enough like an action movie. There was some action sequences where I was impressed that they were in the movie I was currently watching. But that's like the extent of it. There was a lot of I'm not sure why this is happening or like that's too much like they try to make it at like a like the Christmas and mythological things like there's like organizations and stuff. It was almost too much world building for a movie like this and for it to be over two hours is a hard.

And you know, it's one of those things where like, like when you think of the movie Elf, which is one of my favorite holiday movies, they they give enough winks and nods to like common Santa mythology that you're like, oh, that's cute. I love that. That's great, right? We have the book of the naughty list and all that stuff. Whereas in this it was like too much. There's a part where Santa Claus is lifting weights and after he lifts weights, he eats a cookie. Right. And you were a little upset. You were like. You're like. This is ridiculous. Santa doesn't only eat cookies.

7:55 This is going too far. And at 1st and I was kind of like oh it's not a big deal, blah blah blah blah. But then later in the movie we find out that Missus Claus is actually a shape shifting body double because she says she just baked macaroons for Santa and Santa doesn't like macaroons. Now I think I would have been OK with that if at some point someone handed him a macaroon and he was like no thanks. But like came out of nowhere. Well I just want to say I didn't have that bad of a reaction. I was upset but you made it seem like this is the worst. Well, did you throw a tantrum? No, yes, I voiced my grievances. So the so I guess to to your point, yeah, they I think they played into some of those holiday tropes a little too much.

8:48 It's like, OK, I guess Santa only eats cookies and drinks milk. Like, that's weird. I wasn't mad that JK Simmons was like, you could see his arms and was lifting weights. I'm like, yeah, cool, great. Love this. But the cookie thing, I don't know why was a step too far for me. It just pushed you over the edge. Because I was like, this is dumb. Like OK, you can't get that built off of cookies and milk. I, you know, I really, it's so funny with movies like this because and it's, I'm like, yeah, Santa Claus and, you know, awesome giant reindeer and elf security guards and like that I'm on board with. But then just certain little details. I was like, oh, come on, that's ridiculous. Oh, oh wait, can I talk about my big grievance? Sure, it's your show too, so.

9:41 So the Chris Evans character, Jack has a kid, right? So he and the mom are not together. I don't think they were ever together or anything like that, Dylan. And so the mom is, she's a doctor. And so she calls him and he's kind of like drunk and he's always kind of doing bad stuff. And she's like, look, I'm at the hospital. I have two women in labor. Their contractions are XY and Z. You just got to go pick your kid up from school and he's like, oh, OK, fine. He goes to pick the kid up from school and when he gets to the house she's at the house and she's like showered out of. Like, well, to be fair, I think she was still in her scrubs, but she was home.

10:22 No, she wasn't. She was wearing a red sweater. So it confusing. So that for me, we all know if you've listened to the podcast for a long time, I always have problem with timelines, right? Like, I don't know, I have AI know, I say it as a joke. I have a theater minor, right? And so one of the things one of my teachers always said to me was like, I hate in shows when they're handed a cup of coffee and you can clearly tell that there's nothing in the cup, right, right. It's like, why not just put something in the cup so that it looks weighted, right? So it makes it look more real. And this to. Me. Right. It is like usually like in it's a go cup and when they put it down you can hear that it's empty. So it's like, why in this did we make this big stink about him needing to go pick up the kid and then 15 minutes later she's home? Yeah, I think.

11:08 I mean, I don't think they thought anybody would care. It is one of those things where you think about it because that's what we're doing now. That's part of our thing, is that we tend to overanalyze things, but that's why we do it. That was one of the things. You as soon as she was there, you went. She's home. What? What? What? What? And you know what make it I would. Look, I get it, he should go pick up his kid, but why not it be something like I got it. Look, I just got back from doing all the shopping and I had a overnight shift at the hospital. Can you just go pick him up? Well. That's essentially what did happen, but for some reason she was already home. It's just, it is bizarre.

11:48 It's really bizarre. I mean I think this movie, it has a lot going on and has too much going on because I feel like I should have either went the wholesome route or the actiony route. The blending of the two for this specifically didn't really work too well. And I think for me when it really like jumped the shark in a movie like this, we have to talk about gorilla, gorilla, gorilla. I feel like 3 different people said a different ways in this movie. Gorilla. Yeah, I think Gorilla is right. So she's the Christmas witch? Yeah, she's a Nordic witch. Icelandic. No, Who cares? Scandinavia. She is a Christmas witch that has dated Krampus at one point or another.

12:32 Oh, and Krampus is Santa Claus's brother. Yes family tree here this second that she turned into the Christmas witch. I said OK like this was this is some power Ranger villain like I what the the choker like I what are we doing OK. I see. Yes, yes, yes. OK. So for a second I thought when you meant she changed into like the actual giant troll version. Of no witch, I'm going to get to that. Oh, that was bad too. Yes, because she was a blonde Sabrina the teenage witch then turned into straight black hair, wasn't really menacing because it's still the same character, and then turned into some old giant CGI hag. What I was fine with the final, the final transformation. It's weird like in in the lore that's what Grilla looks like. Great, Didn't like.

13:29 It grill late right I. Like I was just like when she transformed into that, I was just like, oh, this is getting weird. This whole thing is getting weird. Like, I don't care. Does that make sense? Yeah, yeah. So you had mentioned that you had enjoyed some of the action scenes. Is there one that sticks out to you in particular? I did like the one where they were actually taking Santa, like kidnapping him and the Rock had to forgot his name. In the movie Elf Cow, Cow, Cow the Rock, the elf was chasing after them. And like, working with the North Pole, that was. That's fine. Yeah. Yeah, but what about you? I enjoyed the final fight. I liked because you know me, I'm always like when when the animals get the upper hand, I enjoy that.

14:12 So Santa has like some really cool like bellowing call that he does to bring the reindeer in and so they come in and they with their like glowing antlers, which was also very cool. They end up putting gorilla into a a snow globe. The reindeer were probably the best part of the entire movie. Yeah. Chris Evans, we need to have a talk about your accent. It wasn't consistent. It was also very odd. I think he was from Brooklyn. He was doing like he was doing like an accent like this. There was one time, there was one time, I can't remember what it was. I think it would. He was first introduced to the world and like maybe Lucy Liu's character was like, I don't know, but something happened.

14:53 The bear, the polar bear, which is very cute. He went, what are we doing here? And I was like, that's do you? Do you hear yourself? It was a choice. It was. Odd. Like I know he he can kind of play with accents like that a little bit. Like, you know what it felt like to me, it kind of felt like watching like Mark Wahlberg upping his, upping his like. Accent. His Bostonian accent. You know it like that's what it felt like to me. It was like, you don't sound like that, but I know there's something there, yeah. You know, it was just and I feel like I didn't notice it at first, but then like. In that scene. I would say 1/4 of the way through the movie I was like, wait, what is he doing? Yeah, that's interesting.

15:36 So the the red 1 and I would say maybe watch it. It's like, OK, like it's a fun time. Just don't expect expect many moments of like Nick Kroll being possessed by the Christmas switch, but like Nick Kroll himself talking via through her and it like lasts way too long. Yeah. And it was. That was an interesting thing for me as well because, as we know, because of his work, he could do like, tons of voices. Yeah. And then he just did this like, weird sort of demonic voice for some reason, I don't know, in Aruba. Any final words of red 1 before we switch to the other two to do like a rapid fire mini?

16:20 Yeah, so all I I do, I want to know what people think of this. Like I feel like with Wicked, I want you to just tell me how much you cried. And I want to know that you felt the exact same way as me with this one. Like me. I'm like, maybe I'm just not like a espionage Action Y kind of guy, and maybe I didn't get it. I don't know, I feel like you are though. You've been really enjoying James Bond. That's. Well, that's because it's campy, though It's. So campy and also just horrible. But did not age well. For me, no, it didn't age well, yeah. That's true. Like tell us, is there any red one stands? I know. I feel like on YouTube we're going to be like, oh, they're going to be like, actually Red 1 is a play.

17:01 I love that for you. Wasn't for us. Wasn't for us, but I. Wouldn't mind watching it again with more people just to be like guys. Yeah, they could probably do like a very modern Mystery Science Theater 3000 with this movie. Oh. My God, we totally could. So on to our next. Holiday, we're going to get better. We watched a few. You know, we really wanted to fit Hot Frosty into this. We unfortunately were unable to do that. Maybe we'll do that for Patreon, but Hot Frosty to be determined. So our little secret Lindsay Lohan. Out of these three, this holy unholy Trinity of holiday current movies was the best for me personally.

17:43 I thought our little secret. I'm like, oh, give me Kristin Chenoweth being an absolute jerk. Give me Lindsay Lohan and her prime again. Giving me like ROM com, giving me funny, giving me the things I missed about her. Loved it. I am so on board with these Lindsay Lohan Netflix movies like Irish Wish. Loved it. Still awkward to say, yeah. Irish wish. Irish wish? Irish wish? It makes you want to yeah, culturally appropriate the language. Exactly. So with our little secret, it feels very much along the same vein. It's it's a ROM com. You know exactly where it's going to go. You know it exactly, but it's delivering and I was OK with it.

18:25 I laughed. I had a great time. Do I think that there was like, you know, instances where I was like, OK, this is like, silly. Like when she ate all those cookies because she was high. It's like, well, why'd you blame it on the dog? Like, that's rude. But then you have to be, oh, it's a ROM com. Like, of course, there has to be like, outrageous situations where, like, if this would actually happen, like if I got high, we were going to church and I said I was going to do a reading. Yeah, I would be absolutely terrified. Would I eat all the cookies? Also yes. But I would be scared. I would be scared that Chris and Chenoweth would get mad at. Me, at that point, I would just leave, right, Right.

19:06 I would just leave. She's going to scream at me. What did you think about the ROM comness of it though? Like they were together, they broke up because she was leaving, and then they meet again because they're significant. Others are related. Yeah, I loved it because I, I like that. I like knowing what's going to happen and I like seeing how it's going to happen, right? Because from the beginning we know that they're meant for each other. And so the fact that they're going to come back together again, we now get to see their chemistry, how the sparks are going to fly and when they're going to finally realize that they're the one for the other. Right. It's like, oh God, when are they going to get back together?

19:47 But then you're like, Oh my God, And they're like, they're falling in love again. Oh. My God. See, they were meant to be all along. Yeah. So I think I like that part of it. Did you as well? Yeah, I mean, of course I did. This reminds me, you know, there's been quite a few actually really good ROM coms this year. You know, we got what was the one. With Sidney Sweeney and Glenn Powell. Oh, yes and no. Anyone but you. Anyone but you. That one was really good. That right? Yeah. Wow. That because I think it's based off of. Much Ado about nothing, yes? Loved, loved it. Irish wish. Loved it. Yeah. Give me more of these. And also give me art house.

20:28 Give me the complicated movies. Like there has to be a good balance that we're getting. Yeah. And I feel like Red 1 is too much this way, whereas our little secret knows exactly what it's trying to be, you know? Yeah, I agree. I agree. And I think, like I will say, I think my one thing with Our Little Secret is that it didn't necessarily feel as Christmassy as a Christmas movie could feel. Red 1 felt more Christmassy. Yeah, mostly because Santa was in it. Yes, this was all like leading up to Christmas. It was. Holiday. Yeah. And so, like, they went to church, a church pageant, right? And they had just some traditions that they did together.

21:13 There's a lot of sweaters. Lots of sweaters and, you know, but, but yeah, I think like you said, Kristin Chenoweth is definitely the star. Who played the male lead? His name is Ian Harding. He's cute. Yeah, there's a whole subplot in in this movie where Ian Harding's character Logan is trying to prove himself at work, and he has a real big project to do. And you And it just turns out that Lindsay Lohan's character is like a project manager. Stupid. Yeah, I didn't need it, but it was like that was a thing to get them to work together. Fine. You know what you did point out which you were like, I don't understand this And it's like it is a ROM com thing. You don't question it is she was leaving from work, suitcase and all from a holiday party to get on a plane or travel to the thing. It's a staple.

22:04 I don't know why they do it and what started that. I would never personally take all my luggage with me, go to work and then leave work to then travel. I take 1/2 day the day before I'm supposed to travel to make sure I'm packed. Yes, and then leave. Yes 100% I, I, I, I remember that being a sticking point for me mainly probably because I just would never do it. But I also feel like with work from home opportunities you might she might have been able to work something out. That is true I guess. She's she's a big wink at the company, I think. Sure, I guess show anything on our little secret before we move on to our last one.

22:44 My final review of Our Little Secret is a ROM com delight with a hint of holiday. And Kristen Chenoweth, yeah, more of her, too. And love. Her would love it. Yeah, yeah. Before we get into our our last what? I don't know. I was like, it's this one, Yeah. Before we get into our last one, we have we have like a interesting cookie sandwich going on. It's like red one, our little secret. Not bad. Merry little gentleman, What is? It just the merry gentleman. Merry little gentleman. Nobody was little on this. Wowzers. Before we get into that one, what makes a holiday movie for you? Like, what are the things you look for in a holiday movie that you like?

23:32 Does that make sense? Am I asking you a question that makes sense? Yeah, yeah. OK. So here are my things OK, ready. No, no, it what it what it really is for me is it's it's the heartwarming feeling, the Grinch by the by the end of it, I want to feel warm and toasty, like I just had a nice warm cup of cocoa. Right. And so with like Elf, come on, just the final one. Some of the final scenes of Elf make me cry every time I watch it. And we watch it every year. I got something like the holiday with Cameron Diaz and Jude Law and just Jack Black, Jack Black and Kate Winslet.

24:13 It's just, I don't know, the music in it is so perfect and the balance between the two stories is so perfect. And the ending, just how warm it makes you feel and how happy that there's love, whether it's familial love, romantic love. That is what makes me feel like a holiday movie. I. Get that I, I think I'm in the same boat like I I like because I could go for a movie that takes place during the holidays but is like horror or a drama. I could go for that. But I do think that like the thing that it needs is you either need it to fulfill that stress and mayhem of like families getting together. You need to fulfill that. Then what was the one, the queer 1 where was like all seasons or all seasons or something like that? That 1 was great because it wasn't a typical holiday movie. So I'm also open to new ones.

25:04 But I think across the board, what makes it good, at least for us, is that heart warming. Yeah. By the end of it, they need to learn a lesson. It just happens to be on Christmas and it happens to coincide with what Christmas means or the holidays, you know. Like perfect example is actually a movie that Noah introduced me to probably about 3 or 4 years ago, which I've never seen before is White Christmas. Oh, yeah. And just the chemistry between Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. There's one scene in it that always sticks out to me. And it's actually just they're both up late and they go to get a sandwich and I think like some milk or something like that. And it's just like these little tender moments between them. It's like, Oh my gosh.

25:50 I mean, the dancing and the performing, and it is just freaking amazing. But that love, right? Because I don't know, for me at least, there's no warmer feeling for the holidays than being with the one that you love. Oh God, so, so sweet. Yeah, no, that's true. No, wow, OK, wow. Just burying my holiday soul here is. Fine on a movie, on a episode that we're talking about Red Wand. But you asked me a very loaded question, OK? I agree. No, that's I'm just like in my head. I think I'm already trying to prepare to talk about the next one.

26:37 I. Feel like we should have ended with this question instead of right now. No, the reason why I asked that is because neither of us said Chad Michael Murray in a strip show. So Married Little Gentleman, or what was it? The merry gentleman. The little the merry gentleman. It sounds like it needs a little or something. The merry big gentleman. I don't know. It sounds gross. I again not sure where who this movie is for because it's not sexy enough. Agreed. And not enough drama. And it also makes no sense of why this woman just comes into this bar and is like, I'm going to do this.

27:20 Yeah. You know, yeah. So the way that Red 1 smashed together espionage and Christmas, this one tries to smash together Magic Mike and Christmas. And I think you're right. You hit the nail on the head in the sense that it wasn't sexy enough. It kind of like everything sort of just fell flat. Out of the three main merry gentlemen, only one of them really had rhythm. You know what I mean? Like Chad Michael Murray, like can't really dance, you know? And then even the Roger who plays the brother-in-law of Ashley by who's played by Britt Robinson, like he's fine. Like obviously Troy is a professional dancer. Right.

28:02 And you can tell it was like, oh, we're going to use these people to like dance, but we're not going to teach these other actors how to dance. And again, they're all attractive, right? They're objectively attractive. They have great bodies. It's just it did feel joyless. It felt Christmas less, you know, I don't know, it just it was missing something. But like it felt like it was supposed to be a Hallmark movie, but like didn't realize it was a Hallmark movie. Yes, because this was a Netflix. Yeah, Netflix original, right, OK. Why not be sexy? Go on Netflix like you can do anything you want. There was that weird 1 scene where they ripped their pants off and they were wearing stockings on their wieners. They all had pants on the entire. Time.

28:47 The entire time. I didn't see a bulge once. No, just saying. You saw pecks? Cool. I can see pecks anywhere. Yeah. I can draw pecks exactly. I can't draw a ball. A Christmas ball, let alone. Jingle, Jingle, Jingle. Yeah. And of course, OK. So then I put on my analytical hat and I just didn't think the stakes were high enough, right? So she's trying to she's trying to save her family's bar slash. It was her family. Yeah, it's her parents. Yeah, most of that, yeah. I literally thought she used to go to this bar and she's like, I'm going to help these guys because they're wow, OK, now it doesn't make it better, it just makes more sense. OK, so there.

29:34 So at least there's that anchor there for you, right? Of why she's doing what she's doing. But the thing that bothered me the most is that so the whole story is, is that she is like, basically a Rockette, right? But they don't call them Rockettes. Yeah. And so she gets let go, and she goes back home, and she decides to save her family's bar and use her dancing talents with these men. Now she's there for maybe a week, right? And then the Rockettes call her and they're like, hey, we want you back. And she's like, all right, great. And then she tells them, and they're like, you're a traitor. You're the worst person on the face of the earth. I can't believe you're doing this to us. You've let everyone down and ruin Christmas. I literally when she got that call, the first thing I said is I swear to God, if they get mad at her for this, I'm going to be upset.

30:21 And they got mad and I got upset. Yeah, I you. Guys can do the choreo without her. Can they? Because they still couldn't. I She wasn't that great of a dancer because it didn't rub off, but sorry. Her teaching skill, this is. The end of the year where we're just very open about. They're like something has happened with Derek and Noah. They're very negative. There are on the naughty list. They're Scrooge. Bah humbug. There's some movies where this is OK, This is one of them. Also, it was weird that she was like, this is something I've always wanted to do. It's like you were just doing it. And like was like such a long running member of the Rockettes that that's why they let her go. What was she like too old?

31:02 I I think there was like some weird insinuating that she might be like a little too old. Like it's like Menudo, they get rid of you once you're a certain age. She overstayed her welcome. I went like the band, yes. Exactly. Don't hear about them often. What's the like horrifying documentary that was released about the group? You know, movie is good is when we're starting to recommend awful boy band documentary. Well, the the. Documentary was good, what happened to the boy band was horrific. Right, right. You know, I honestly, I was excited to watch this movie because of Chad Michael Murray, who didn't have a crush on Chad. I did not. OK. Who didn't aside from Derek?

31:44 I mean, I didn't, but I was like, he's attractive. You know, I was like these. Yeah, of course. Especially at the time of, like, who was on TV. It's like he's obviously a commodity. Interesting. It wasn't a draw after it started. So I would say Netflix, you either really need to lean into the Lindsay Lohan stuff of it or really go Hallmark. I just go absurd.
